What is Whole Grain?
It refers to grains that contain all 3 edible and nutritious parts of the grain as shown in the picture below.

When a grain is refined, usually only the endosperm is preserved which creates its white appearance like white flour and white rice. The nutrient-dense outer bran and inner germ layers are removed, leading to the loss of potential dietary fibre, vitamins and mineral. Therefore, this is the reason why the Health Promotion Board actively recommends Singaporeans to consume whole grain over refined grains in diets.
